Homeless man denies sex romp in broad daylight on NSW bus

A homeless NSW man has denied taking part in a sex romp in broad daylight on the back seat of a Hunter Valley bus.

Detectives allege Ryan Jones, 23, of Windale, had sex on the bus as it travelled between the Lake Macquarie suburbs of Charlestown and Warners Bay on a Friday morning in late March.

Jones appeared via video link in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday facing six charges including behaving in an offensive manner on the bus between 10am and 11am.

He allegedly performed a sex act on his female partner and participated in other sexual activities on the back seat of the bus.

He’s also been charged with assault after he allegedly told the bus driver “I’m trying really hard not to spit on you” before he went ahead and spat on him.

NSW Police have previously said Jones spat at the driver after he ordered the couple to stop having sex and booted them off his bus.

The pair subsequently tried to board another bus but the driver had been warned about their antics and refused to take them as passengers.

Jones – who’s both homeless and unemployed – is accused of travelling on the bus without a valid ticket, intentionally or recklessly damaging property, affray and stalking.

The 23-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the offences.

Court documents state Jones spat on the bus’s Opal card reader and the driver’s partition before threatening two men – causing them to fear for their safety.

The bus had to be removed from service to be professionally cleaned.

The man’s 31-year-old girlfriend, who’s also from Windale, is due to face Toronto Local Court in mid-May charged with offensive conduct and inciting the commission of crimes.

Jones pleaded guilty on Thursday to a number of separate shoplifting and theft offences over a six-month period.

He initially denied stealing seven bottles of bourbon, a block of chocolate, perfume, facial scrub and rosehip oil. When shown CCTV footage of the thefts he told police: “Heaps of c**ts look like that.”

Jones was remanded in custody to reappear in court on May 23 on the sex-on-a-bus charges.
