'Home Sweet Home Alone': Fans divided by first trailer for Disney+ sequel

Watch: Home Sweet Home Alone trailer

Christmas classic film Home Alone is getting a reboot – but the first look has left fans divided.

The film franchise, which sees a young child face off against burglars in a series of creative ways, is back on Disney+.

Home Sweet Home Alone promises to "unleash comedic mayhem", with Jojo Rabbit star Archie Yates taking on the role of Max Mercer, a mischievous young boy who is left behind by his family as they head to Japan for the festive season.

However, things turn sour when two robbers Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney break into his home to retrieve an heirloom.

Now it’s up to him to protect the house in increasingly creative ways.

It seems he could have some help though, as in the trailer it’s revealed that one of the cops on the scene is Buzz McCallister (Devin Ratray), the older brother of Kevin’s (Macaulay Culkin) character in the original two movies.

But with the first and second Home Alone movies holding such a place in fans’ hearts, it seems that not everyone is keen on the idea of a new addition.

After the trailer debuted, fans on Twitter shared their thoughts – and it was mostly divided.

One fan wrote: “Well, we got a trailer for #HomeSweetHomeAlone and based on what I'm seeing, I'm kinda mixed on this one.

“It does feel like all of the other bad Home Alone sequels, but at the same time, it does capture the magic of the original. We'll see.”

“Wayment…the kid and the mom have British accents now?!?” added another of the cast, which includes the British Yates and Irish star Aisling Bea playing his mother. “This is like doing a remake of Harry Potter with American actors. This looks horrible.”

Over on YouTube, one viewer commented: “I look forward to seeing how they can make this premise work in an age where everybody has a phone.”

“It's good to see that Archie Yates who played Yorki in JoJo Rabbit get his first leading role. Looking forward in seeing this film but I will say that nothing beats the original first two films,” said another.

Others need more convincing to tune in though, with one explaining: “The original will always be the best imo. Sitting around the TV on Christmas Day and watching the original with my family was some fun times. Why bother with a remake?”

“There is no point in remaking Home Alone, cuz there is nothing to improve,” added another viewer. “There were no outdated special effects in those movies to make them better or anything. Completely pointless.”

Others claimed it was feeding into "nostalgia-bait" – an increase in rebooted or remade products intended to bring back the original audience.

Home Sweet Home Alone premieres on Disney Plus on 12 November.
