'Home Sweet Home Alone': Rob Delaney and Ellie Kemper on being slapstick punching bags (exclusive)

Rob Delaney and Ellie Kemper were content to become punching bags for the slapstick of Home Sweet Home Alone, with Delaney stating that kind of on-screen punishment is a "rare privilege".
The comics portray married couple Jeff and Pam in the movie, who break into the home of Archie Yates's youngster Max after he is left behind by his family.

Much like the Wet Bandits in the original film, Jeff and Pam fall victim to all manner of slapstick chaos, including pool ball projectiles and a floor covered in painful Lego bricks.
"For sure our characters would've been just bloodied piles and powdered skeletons by the end of it. But that's so wonderful and fun," Delaney told Yahoo Entertainment UK.
He added: "We all have incredibly violent fantasies for most hours of every day and to be able to have those executed on us was a rare privilege.
"And also not to be hospitalised at the end of the day or wheeled into a morgue at the end of the day."
Numerous professionals have analysed the original film in an attempt to decide what sort of effect the slapstick violence would have on the Wet Bandits in real life.

But Delaney said the cuts, bruises and other wounds of Home Sweet Home Alone were entirely confined to fiction, with the filming a mostly painless experience.
"We had an amazing stunt team who trained us really well and took very good care of us," he said.
One particular scene sees Pam and Jeff struggle to escape a frozen-over outdoor swimming pool, while trying to find a way into Max's house.
Kemper said: "The most fun for me was the pool. That felt like we were at an amusement park or some kind of ride because it was just silliness.
"We were in wetsuits in a pool tumbling all around. I recently learned you hurt your knee, but we didn't notice because we were having too much fun."

But Pam and Jeff are more sympathetic than the Wet Bandits, breaking into Max's home to reclaim a priceless family heirloom rather than simply hunting for loot.
"I think that there's a nobler purpose, but they're still doing something wrong. It's peppered with goodness," said Kemper.
Home Sweet Home Alone is available to stream via Disney+ now after premiering as part of the Disney+ Day celebrations on 12 November.
