Home camera captures scary moment Aussie family hit by out-of-control sedan in driveway
The Melbourne family are lucky to be alive after surviving the scary early morning incident as they were about to leave for work.
A young Australian couple and their toddler are lucky to be alive after an out-of-control sedan ploughed into their driveway, slamming into the family car as they were getting ready to leave for work. The terrifying moment was captured on home CCTV as the car careened into them just moments after the couple's three-year-old daughter was buckled into her carseat.
The Melbourne family, from Werribee in the city's southwest, were loading up their Ford Territory at 9.45am on Wednesday, December 11, when mum Haylea Ferguson saw a speeding Holden approach from the corner of her eye, as it drove across the neighbour's front lawn.
CCTV showed the Holden car bolt into the driveway, ploughing into the passenger-side of the vehicle.
Haylea's partner Brett was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time, right where the vehicle made impact.
Miraculously, all three escaped with just minor injuries, with Haylea treated in hospital for cuts and bruises. Minutes away from driving Brett to work that Wednesday morning, Haylea said the only thought she had at the time was for her baby girl.
"I've seen smoke come flying out of the car, so [was] instantly thinking — fire or explosion," Haylea told 9News.
"I've taken her [the child] to safety across the road," she said, in anticipation of the vehicle combusting.
Brett said he's "lucky to be here" after bearing the brunt of the collision.
The driver of the Holden, a 22-year-old local man, is understood to have suffered a medical episode and he will undergo a licence review, police say.
In an online fundraising campaign, Haylea said her young daughter has been left shaken by the scary driveway incident.
"My three-year-old wasn't hurt but she remembers it all and will ask lots of questions," she wrote. "She hasn't been sleeping well and she won't leave our sides."
The mum also said the family did not have car insurance on the vehicle and have been left with no means of transport for the Christmas holidays. "We had lots of appointments and Christmas parties we have missed out on already," she wrote.
