Home and Away star Emily Weir has been living the dream, after nabbing a highly contested role on the Aussie soap that kick-started careers of actors such as Chris Hemsworth and Isla Fisher.

However, the Australian actress revealed to Who Magazine that due to anxiety and panic attacks, she previously turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism.

While the star is now sober, attends AA meetings and has regular sessions with a counsellor – she still wants to talk about her past struggles with anxiety and addiction.

She mentions that when she was younger, “anxiety wasn’t spoken about like it is now.”

Elaborating further she adds, “The more you shine a light on anxiety and addiction, the less power it has.”

“It’s definitely not easy, but by speaking out, I hope anyone else who’s struggling realises that these issues can and do affect anyone.”

How Emily Weir’s struggles with anxiety led her to alcohol

Emily’s parents divorced when she was 19, and that was the beginning of her downward spiral. She started suffering from panic attacks but had no idea what anxiety was. For her, this was a very scary moment.

Reflecting on her experience she explains, “I went from being the centre of my social group and a real high-flyer to someone whose lights had gone out. It was frightening.”

From there, Emily turned to booze to combat crippling anxiety – but hid her addiction well. On the outside, her career was soaring.

After a particularly messy night, the actress realised her lifestyle was untenable.

“I knew I had to stop drinking. It wasn’t serving me well and I knew I had to finally address why I was drinking.”
