Children may have seen fatal Hobart fight

Two young children are believed to have witnessed a violent suburban street fight in which a Hobart man suffered serious injuries causing him to die in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

The 39-year-old from Goodwood died on Monday morning and a 46-year-old Moonah man is in custody for being questioned by police.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel told reporters the victim went to a house at Lutana where he was confronted and a fight broke out.

"There were children at the house and they will certainly be the focal point of our attention, they will be provided with support, but we will also look to them as possible witnesses of what occurred in that fight outside," he said.

"They are quite young, but they are of such an age that they are able to assist police."

Forensic teams are sifting through multiple items that could have been used as weapons and Insp Joel would not confirm the nature of the victim's injuries other than describing them as significant.

He spoke briefly with police before leaving the scene with paramedics.

The 46-year-old man has also been treated for injuries to his hands.

Charges will be laid pending the outcome of pathology reports.
