Police are desperate to contact two witnesses after a passing motorist stumbled across the body of a hit-and-run victim on a Queensland highway.

A passing driver found the 18-year-old man's body on the New England Highway at Geham, north of Toowoomba, about 9pm on Thursday.

Police believe the man was struck a short time earlier, while walking along the highway near the intersection with Rueshle Road.

Detectives don't know what kind of vehicle hit the young man. But they've appealed for two male witnesses to come forward.

One was the driver of a heavy vehicle who stopped at the scene and spoke to other witnesses.

The other was a man who asked staff about the incident at the Cabarlah Hotel nearby.

The victim was from Geham, a rural community in the Toowoomba Region west of Brisbane.
