An elderly man remains in hospital after he was injured in a hit and run in the Melbourne CBD, and police are questioning the driver.

The 85-year-old man was run down by a car in Grattan Street on Saturday morning, and was taken to the Royal Melbourne hospital with life threatening injuries.

A 35-year-old Thornbury man is being questioned by police over the incident.

The driver initially stopped at the scene but later fled in a black Mitsubishi.

The elderly man is now in a serious but stable condition.

Witnesses to the crash are urged to come forward.
