A hillwalker who died after falling while walking near Mount Errigal in County Donegal has been named locally as Brian Campbell from Londonderry.

Emergency services were alerted to an incident in the Poisoned Glen area of Dunlewey at about 13:00 on Saturday.

It is understood Mr Campbell, who was in his 50s, sustained fatal injuries after falling.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the incident is being treated as a "tragic accident".

Following a recovery operation, Mr Campbell was taken from the area and transported to the mortuary at University Hospital Letterkenny.

A second man, who is also in his late 50s, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

He was airlifted from the scene to the hospital in Letterkenny.

Members of the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) and the Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter 118, based in County Sligo, were also called to assist during the incident.

Laura McFadden from DMRT commended the emergency service personnel involved in the ten-hour operation

She told BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today programme the men had been found in a “very difficult location” and getting to them required “difficult and intricate rope systems".

“It was a very intricate and technical rescue,” she added.
