High school football player arrested over death of pregnant classmate
A high school football player has been arrested after the body of his teenage classmate, who was understood to be six months pregnant, was found in a dumpster.
Aaron Trejo was arrested Sunday, suspected of killing Breana Rouhselang after the 17-year-old’s body was found near her Indiana home on Sunday.
Trejo, 16, was on the Mishawaka High School football team, and Ms Rouhselang reportedly was a team manager. Ms Rouhselang was also a cheerleader and a softball coach at the high school, AP reports.
Alex Arendt of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said Trejo is in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail and is being held without bond.
Though the full extent of their relationship is unknown, Ms Rouhselang’s stepmum told local media that the young woman was six months pregnant.
Ms Rouhselang’s family reportedly saw her last on Saturday night and called the police when they got worried early Sunday morning.
Police located her body in a restaurant dumpster about a block from her house, and her classmate was arrested the same day, AP reported.
The cause of death hasn’t yet been determined. Officials said Trejo would be charged as an adult on Monday.
Mishawaka High School will make counsellors available to students.
“We’re just focusing on healing the kids,” Meg Sauer, chief communications officer for the school district, said in a statement to the Indianapolis Star.
“Many of them have never suffered a loss, especially like this one.”
