Heroic firefighters save WWII veteran's precious medals from ferocious house fire

A 99-year-old World War II veteran has cheated death after an intense Brisbane house fire that killed his pet dogs and nearly claimed his prized war medals and memorabilia.

Bob Jackson is known as a local hero in Salisbury, having fought as a tail gunner during WWII, earning a legion of medals and honours.

After hearing fire alarms around 7.15 last night, neighbours ran to the house and carried him down the stairs to safety.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and braved the flames to go inside Bob’s living room to rescue his precious medals.
