Heinrich fends off GOP challenger in New Mexico Senate race

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D) will win reelection in the deep-blue state of New Mexico, Decision Desk HQ projects.

Though the state is a reliable Democratic bastion in the Southwest, Heinrich’s reelection bid had garnered more attention than usual this cycle because his challenger, Nella Domenici, is the daughter of the late Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.).

Domenici, a hedge fund executive, had also brought in notable fundraising hauls throughout the year, raising eyebrows among political observers.

Nonetheless, Heinrich was widely expected to prevail on Tuesday. He defeated his Republican opponent in 2018 by 20 points, and an Emerson College Polling/The Hill survey released in August found him leading Domenici by double digits.
