Heartbreaking tributes for mother and son killed in horror crash

Tributes have begun to flood in for a mother and son who were killed in a horror crash in regional Victoria.

Amanda Kilmister, 37, and her 12-year-old son were instantly killed when a truck on the Valley Highway at Brimin ploughed head on into their family car at about 9.50pm on Friday.

The crash also critically injured the boy’s 44-year-old father, Paul, and his two infant brothers – aged just eight months and two years.

Family friend Skye Shelton told the Herald Sun the couple and three of their four children had been just minutes from returning home from dinner at their local RSL when the crash occurred.

“They’re a close family. They’re not going to be the same without them,’’ Ms Shelton told the publication.

“Her little boy had a heart of gold. He was cheeky and he will be missed.

“Amanda loves her boys dearly. She was a great mum … It’s devastating.”

Police are expecting to charge the 31-year-old truck driver, who was interviewed by detectives and released pending further inquiries.

He was treated for shock following the crash but received no other injuries.

Command Superintendent John Fitzpatrick revealed emergency workers faced a confronting scene on arrival at the crash site on Friday night.

“The gravity of that scene – to see a family in that position was very difficult … all of those scenes are terrible to witness,” he told reporters on Saturday.

Mr Kilmister, 44, remains in a critical but stable condition at The Alfred hospital.

The two-year-old boy is now in a stable condition while the eight-month old remains in a critical condition at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
