Touching reason grandfather chose to eat alone at wedding

A woman has revealed the heartbreaking story behind a photo of her grandfather eating alone at her wedding.

The image, posted to Twitter earlier this week, shows the elderly man sitting alone and hunched over on a bale of hay in front of a wooden rocking chair.

On the chair are photos of his late wife and a framed note that says: “We know you would be here today if heaven wasn’t so far away.”

“Pawpaw sat and ate with mawmaw today at my wedding,” Sahrah Elswick, the bride from the US state of West Virginia, wrote on Twitter.

Many were touched by the personal moment and said the pair must have been deeply in love.

“In this world of cynical mean spirited people all this man wants is a moment with his wife,” one wrote.

“This is what marriage truly is. You stay together through thick and thin,” another said.

Ms Elswick said on Twitter her grandmother had died two years ago and the family was still struggling to come to terms with her death.

The touching photo has been retweeted almost 20,000 times since being posted on Sunday.
