If You Had Bought Kingbo Strike (HKG:1421) Stock Five Years Ago, You'd Be Sitting On A 93% Loss, Today

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Anyone who held Kingbo Strike Limited (HKG:1421) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 93% in that time. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 29% in the last year. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 13% in a month. However, we note the price may have been impacted by the broader market, which is down 11% in the same time period.

While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over five years Kingbo Strike's earnings per share dropped significantly, falling to a loss, with the share price also lower. At present it's hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Kingbo Strike shareholders are down 29% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 20%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 41% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
