Gunmen have abducted at least 20 people on their way home from a wedding in west-central Nigeria, a government official says.

The group of wedding guests was kidnapped while travelling by bus on the Tegina-Zungeru highway in Rafi local government area of Niger State on Sunday, the state's chief press secretary Mary Noel-Berje said.

Three vigilantes - who are self-appointed or informal law enforcers - were killed when trying to prevent the abduction, National Union of Road Transport Workers official Bello Muhammed said.

Muhammed placed the number of kidnapped people at 30.

Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello said in a statement that security forces were searching for the kidnappers.
