A man has been shot by police near Ipswich in Queensland after firing at officers while holed up in a rural property.

The 55-year-old underwent surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital on Sunday and is in a serious condition after being shot just before midday on Sunday.

An emergency declaration was made after the man barricaded himself inside a shed at the property in Walloon in the early hours of the morning.

The man is alleged to have intermittently fired shots at police after they attended for a welfare check.

Queensland Police's Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident with the assistance of the Crime and Corruption Commission.
