A NSW man who allegedly choked a teenager and held a gun to her head is set to face court.

The man, 23, allegedly threatened the woman, 19, over the phone on Sunday morning before heading to her Shellharbour home, police say.

While there, he allegedly choked her and held a gun to her head.

He was charged with possessing an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, using a carriage service to threaten to kill, assault and intimidation.

The man was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court on Monday.

The woman was not injured.
