GST response within weeks: Turnbull

The federal government's response to a report on overhauling the carve-up of $66 billion in GST revenue will be released within weeks rather than months, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says.

The Productivity Commission has handed over its report on the GST distribution, having said in an interim report the system should use the second-strongest state or average as the basis of the carve-up, rather than the strongest.

"The first thing to do is to study it carefully and obviously the treasurer will be consulting with his state counterparts as well," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Melbourne on Tuesday.
