CCTV captures brazen attempt to break into parking ticket machines

Three people have been filmed trying to break into a number of parking ticket machines with a chainsaw and crowbar in Canberra.

ACT Policing released video of the failed robbery which it said occurred on August 2 at Westfield Belconnen about 2.40am.

The group drove into the shopping centre in a Mazda hatchback, police said.

“Three people, two of a slim build and one of a solid build, all dressed in black, then used petrol-powered grinders and a crowbar in an attempt to access the cash box on two parking payment machines on level two of the centre,” police said.

“Police believe the offenders were disturbed by officers responding to a call from shopping centre security, and left the car park via the Lathlain Street exit at around 2.45am.”

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Stephen Ladd said the attempted robbery was pointless.

“The cash boxes on these machines are emptied regularly, and many people pay for their parking using their card, so there usually isn’t a large amount of cash in the machines,” he said.

He added police believe the trio planned their robbery in advance.

Police are urging anyone who may have any information that could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the online reporting page.
