Grandfather left ‘brain dead’ after horror attack on Christmas Day

A family claims a grandfather has been left brain dead following an attack in Melbourne’s east on Christmas night.

Victoria Police have been told up to eight people were involved in the assault of a 50-year-old man on Esther Crescent, Mooroolbark, on Wednesday at about 11pm.

He was hit on the head and taken to hospital with life threatening injuries, police said.

A 50-year-old woman was also hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries.

The man’s brother-in-law Mark told 3AW the 54-year-old is “brain dead”, which is “heartbreaking”.

“They knocked my sister out, and had my niece – from what I understand – by the hair,” he told 3AW.

Mark added the attack occurred as the family was saying goodbye visitors at the home in the driveway and described the grandfather as a “gentle giant”.

An 18-year-old Mooroolbark man was arrested at the scene but later released pending further enquiries, police said.

Police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
