Four children found after 900km joyride in family car

A 900km cross-border road trip has ended overnight after four northern Queensland children were found taking a joyride in a family 4WD.

The alarm was raised after three boys, one aged 14 and two 13-year-olds, along with a 10-year-old girl, took the silver Nissan Patrol from Gracemere, in the Rockhampton region, on Saturday.

The 4WD belongs to the father of one of the children, police said.

The group took fishing rods and cash, and one of the children left a note for his family indicating he was leaving, according to authorities.

It was believed the vehicle had travelled across the border to New South Wales and had been sighted near Glen Innes early yesterday afternoon – a journey that would take 10 hours of non-stop driving to complete.

The vehicle was seen at a service station in Banana where it filled up with petrol before driving off without anyone paying, police said.

Police, who appealed for public assistance to find the four missing children, later found them safe in the Grafton, in NSW’s Northern Rivers region.

Authorities thanked the media and the public for their assistance in finding the children.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
