Grace Tame breaks silence over awkward photo with PM

Ms Tame recently made headlines after being pictured alongside Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the 2022 Australian of the Year Finalists Morning Tea at The Lodge in Canberra last month.

The 27-year-old, an advocate for victims of sexual abuse, appeared unhappy and reluctant to be in the PM’s company. Mr Morrison said he had no qualms with the meeting.

On Wednesday, Ms Tame took to Twitter and explained how she was feeling.

“The survival of abuse culture is dependent on submissive smiles and self-defeating surrenders. It is dependent on hypocrisy,” she wrote.

Her appearance sparked a clash between hosts of Channel 10’s The Project after co-host Peter van Onselen criticised her conduct in an opinion piece in The Australian newspaper.

Van Onselen, labelled her “childish” and said she should have shown “a bit of respect”. He suggested she should not have gone if she did not want to be there.

Political reporter Amy Remeikis, who appeared on the program, called van Onselen’s opinion piece “devastating”.

His co-host Carrie Bickmore questioned why van Onselen felt the need to tell her how she should have behaved.

Ms Tame's 'completely shocking' discovery during live TV interview

Ms Tame hasn’t seen eye-to-eye with the Mr Morrison and his government.

During a live interview on the ABC in October last year, Ms Tame was shocked and frustrated as she learned of the National Strategy to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse while on the air claiming she had not been consulted on it.

“I mean. That’s my job and I’ve been banging on about it all year that we should be focusing on prevention but I’m not going to be malcontent and complain that I haven’t been invited to participate in that,” she told the program.

“That’s great. That’s great.”

Host Ros Childs asked her when she learned of the strategy to which she responded: “just now”.
