Golf betting: Patrick Reed is bettors' favorite pick to win Sentry Tournament of Champions

Patrick Reed’s enticing odds have made him the most popular pick to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui.

Nearly 10% of bettors at BetMGM have placed a bet on Reed (+2500) to win the tournament. Those bets account for over 12% of the handle and Reed is one of three golfers getting over 10% of the money bet on the tournament.

The other two are favorites. Justin Thomas is the No. 1 favorite at +800 and he’s getting 10.4% of the money on 6.5% of the bets. The other popular pick is Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele at +1200. Schauffele — who opened at +1400 — is getting 10.8% of the money on 7.3% of the bets.

Schauffele is the second-most bet golfer behind Reed. Thomas is fourth and Tony Finau (+2800) is sandwiched between them with 6.7% of bets and 6.2% of the handle. Reed opened at +3300 and his odds dropped as he became the popular pick. He's now tied with Abraham Ancer and Sungjae Im for the 13th-best odds.

The annual year-opening tournament at the Plantation course at Kapalua features tournament winners from the previous year. The field includes 38 players and nine of the top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings. Rory McIlroy is the only top-10 player who isn’t making the trip out to Maui.

Harris English is the defending winner of the tournament and isn’t getting much love from bettors. English (+3300) has gotten just 1.6% of bets and 3% of the handle. English is getting the same percentage of bets as FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantlay (+1200) and fellow Ryder Cup team member Daniel Berger (+2000)
