'It could have been me': GoFundMe page for Eurydice Dixon's family raises $63,000

A GoFundMe campaign for the family of murdered comedian Eurydice Dixon has raised close to $63,000 in just three days.

The 22-year-old was walking home after performing at the Highlander Bar in the CBD when she was raped and murdered at North Carlton’s Princes Park sports field less than a kilometre from where she lived.

Her body was discovered about 3am on Wednesday. Broadmeadows 19-year-old Jaymes Todd has been charged over the attack.

The online fundraiser was set up by Luka Muller, who said she knew Ms Dixon from the comedy circuit. It aims to support the woman’s family suffering a second blow following the death of the victim’s mother 11 years ago.

“I understand that Eurydice’s father wishes to donate a large portion of the funds to charities that Eurydice supported,” Ms Muller wrote on the page.

Many of those who have donated to the online campaign are woman who have expressed how the random attack could have easily happened to them.

In memory of a young woman who was brave, funny and intelligent and because it could have been any of us. Rest in peace Eurydice,” one woman wrote.

Another added: “I’ve walked through this park so often to get home. My thoughts are with your family.”

“I’ve walked home alone through Carlton North, and greater Melbourne. This could have been me. This could have been any of my mates. This is enough. I shouldn’t have to say ‘this is enough’,” a third wrote.

Melbourne park murder sparks safety audit

The woman’s murder has prompted Melbourne officials to discuss an inner-city safety review.

The City of Melbourne, state government and police are set meet on Monday to examine measures such as lighting, CCTV and the positioning of protective services officers, according to the Herald Sun.

Police and charity counsellors were at Princes Park on Sunday where her body was found, to talk to the public about the tragedy, while rival football teams who played nearby held a moment’s silence around flowers and tributes that have built up at the site.

The safety audit comes after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews took aim at victim-blaming attitudes in a powerful social media post in the wake of a young woman’s death.

A candlelight vigil will also be held there on Monday evening.
