Glitch causes digital licence rollout delay
Queenslanders hoping to access their new digital driver’s licence on their mobile phones have been met with more delays.
The new Queensland government app allows anyone with a valid state driver’s licence, marine licence or other photo identification card to access a digital version of their driver’s licence, allowing them to leave their physical licence at home.
From November 1, the digital licence can be used wherever identification information is needed, including at the post office, in bars or nightclubs or when renting a car.
More than 15 0000 Queenslanders downloaded the app on Wednesday despite the glitches.
Despite the app launching on Wednesday, people have now been urged to wait until the technical issues are resolved before downloading the new Digital Licence app.
“We’re very excited to see the positive response from Queenslanders to the release of Queensland’s first Digital Licence,” Queensland’s Acting Director General Sally Stannard said.
“We know it’s very popular right now, almost as popular as tickets to a Taylor Swift concert, and that is causing some delays for customers.
“We’re asking Queenslanders to be patient and take their time to download it, wait until tomorrow or try later in the week.
“When you do download it, it’s going to be very helpful for users, and for businesses around the state who will be able to easily verify identities.”
The app has been in development since 2018.
It faced delays after it was trialled in Townsville and on the Fraser Coast.
Last year’s Optus data breach and Medibank hack meant developers were forced to increase the app’s security testing.
Queensland is the third state to offer digital licences, joining NSW and South Australia.
Victoria is set to roll out the new technology in 2024.
The app can be downloaded from the Apple and Google Play Stores.
When signing up, Queenslanders will need their passport and/or birth certificate as a further proof of identity for verification.
