Girl swept through underground storm drain for a kilometre
A 13-year-old girl who fell down a storm drain was swept for a kilometre underground before locals hauled her to safety two hours later.
Dramatic photos of the rescue show a group of men heroically pulling the shaken but mostly unharmed girl from the hole in the ground to the cheers of onlookers.
The girl, named in reports as Wellen Cristina Tavares dos Santos, vanished down the first hole in Maceio, north-eastern Brazil, during heavy rain on Monday.
She was walking to school at the time but slipped and got sucked down into the storm drain.
A young man tried to rescue her but ran into difficulty himself and had to be rescued by his brother, as seen in a video.
The girl was then swept away underground by the current as passers-by called the Fire Department for help.
Firefighters later said she managed to survive because she was not completely submerged and was able to continue breathing.

The teen was amazingly swept for a kilometre through the drain system before she ended up trapped in an underground rainwater harvesting tank.
Locals heard the girl's cries for help and came to her aid. After she was pulled to safety, she was handed over to paramedics, who provided first aid.
She was then taken to a local hospital in a stable condition. The girl suffered minor injuries and hypothermia but was otherwise unharmed in the accident.

The incident comes after a woman was found alive after banging on her coffin while being carried through a cemetery.
Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca, age not reported, had been pronounced dead after a car accident.
During Rosa's funeral in late April, her relatives heard noises coming from her coffin and opened it to find the woman with her eyes open and obvious vital signs.
She was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later.
