Girl comes home from school to find lizard being eaten by spider

A young girl has come home from school to find a redback spider trying to eat an entire lizard in NSW.

Alannah, 10, said she took photos of the bold spider’s dinner after finding the pair outside her family’s front door at their Central Coast home.

“I got very surprised that such a little thing could eat something bigger than it,” Alannah said.

Photos show the dead lizard hanging by the redback’s web, just a few centimetres off the ground as the spider tries to cling to its feast.

Redback spiders have been known to prey on small lizards and even snakes on occasion.

They catch meals by creating a structure that traps prey walking beneath it and then kill it with venom before securing it in silk.

To eat larger prey, the redback will inject digestive fluid to soften the insides in order to suck it up.
