Girl, 5, dies after being hit by car while walking with mum

A five-year-old girl has been killed when she and her mother were struck by a car in Sydney's west.

They were struck by a Toyota Tarago on Rooty Hill Road North in Plumpton at about 7.20pm on Wednesday.

They were both rushed by ambulance to hospital however the child later died from her injuries at Westmead Hospital.

The mother, 25, is in a serious but stable condition.

It is unclear if the mother and daughter were walking on the path or crossing the road, with further information to be released by police later on Thursday, a NSW Police spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

Images obtained by Nine News show the vehicle with substantial damage to its front left side including a smashed windscreen.

The 61-year-old male driver was taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing and is assisting police with their inquiries.

No charges have been laid as of Thursday morning, it is understood.

NSW Police are calling for witnesses to the incident to come forward and anyone who may have dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers online or on 1800 333 000.
