Girl, 4, badly hurt as car hits pedestrians
Four people, including a four-year-old girl, have been injured after a car ploughed into a group of people on the Gold Coast.
The child was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition with head injuries after the crash about 1pm Wednesday along Suter St, near Southport Library, Southport.
It’s understood an elderly person was behind the wheel of a white hatchback when he reversed over a kerb and into a shaded alfresco area of the library, crashing into the pole of a shade sail.
A 37-year-old man was also taken to hospital with head injuries and suspected back injuries, while the occupants of the car, a man and woman aged in their 80s, have been taken to Robina Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and shock.
Queensland Ambulance Services (QAS) Acting Inspector Mitchell Ware told media at the scene the young girl was walking with the 37-year-old man at the time of the crash.
“The driver has just lost control and in an attempt to [correct], at some point has reversed the vehicle and as a result has impacted the shade awning here at the library,” Mr Ware said.
“Given the vicinity, we received multiple calls from a lot of concerned citizens … and our response time and that of all the other emergency services was extremely quick.”
Authorities will review CCTV vision of the incident.
