Girl, 16, dies after waterfall slip during hike with friend

A teenage girl has died after falling more than 30 metres down a waterfall in the US.

Kaylee Marvin, 16, was hiking with a friend in Santaquin Canyon, Utah when police said she took a “misstep” while trying to cross a log and fell down the waterfall, on Monday morning (local time), Fox 8 reports.

Utah County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Tom Hodgson described Kaylee’s death as an “unfortunate accident”.

“With the water up there and the slick rocks the way they are, she just unfortunately didn’t put her feet in the right locations and slipped off the edge,” he said.

The teen suffered serious head and leg injuries. Kaylee was also unconscious and not breathing.

CPR was performed on the 16-year-old for about 40 minutes but she couldn’t be saved.

Kaylee’s father had also been hiking in the area but wasn’t with the two girls.

Sergeant Spencer Cannon said Kaylee’s family described her as “beautiful inside and out”.

Sgt Cannon added in a release that “at this point there is nothing suspicious” about Kaylee’s death.
