Gigantic 800-tonne 'fatberg' cleared from sewer

Grimefighters tackling a giant ‘fatberg’ removed 800 tonnes of grease – equivalent to 130 elephants – from a sewer under popular bars and restaurants.

Experts will now spend months clearing the whopping build-up of fat, grease and oils from the sewer in Cardiff in Wales.

Utility company Welsh Water say they are undertaking a “deep excavation” under the streets of Cardiff Bay.

The $3.58 million project will stop over the Christmas period to avoid stinking out shoppers.

“We’ve got a huge problem down there with blockages,” Steve Wilson, Welsh Water’s director of wastewater services, said.

“The size of the fatberg that has developed under Mermaid Quay is something to behold.

“We’ve taken out 800 tonnes of sewage – 500 of that is fat alone.”

Water companies say fatbergs are becoming a growing problem across the UK as sewer systems are increasingly getting blocked.
