Mahama, who takes over from President Nana Akufo-Addo on Jan. 7, chose Bagbin, who has been Speaker since 2021, after consulting with the national executive and parliamentary leadership of the National Democratic Congress party, according to a statement from the office of the incoming leader.
Ghana’s current parliament will be dissolved at midnight of Jan. 6 and in its place, a new set of lawmakers who were elected during the Dec. 7 vote will be sworn in.
Bagbin, a member of the NDC, faces a vote at the first sitting of the 276-member chamber, which he’s poised to win given the NDC’s near-super majority from last month’s elections.
The NDC won 183 seats, the ruling New Patriotic Party took 88 seats, independent candidates secured four seats while the results for the final constituency will be made known on Monday after ongoing recounting, according to the Electoral Commission. The NDC needs one more seat to reach the so-called two-thirds majority, which will enable them to push through legislation unopposed.
Bagbin, 67, was first elected Speaker in 2021, defeating then-incumbent Mike Oquaye from the NPP. Prior to that he served as the member of parliament for the Nadowli West constituency in the Upper West Region for almost three decades. The former Ghana School of Law scholar took on other roles during this period, including Majority Leader, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Minister of Health and Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing.
