'Where are you?': The Rock calls out Donald Trump over protests

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has joined other athletes and celebrities in questioning why US President Donald Trump is remaining silent during the violent riots that grip the nation.

A week of sometimes violent protests have broken out across the US over the death of African-American man George Floyd - at the hands of a white police officer.

Protests have raged across the US in the wake of the death of Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, with several athletes and other sporting figures taking part.

Aussie NBA star Ben Simmons called out Trump earlier in the week and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was another key basketball figure to slam the president.

Now, Johnson has called out the president’s leadership in a powerful speech to his 185 million Instagram followers.

“Where are you? Where is our leader?’ Johnson said.

“Where’s our leader at this time, when our country is down on its knees, begging, pleading, hurt angry, frustrated, in pain, with its arms out, just wanting to be heard?

“Begging and pleading and praying, for change. Where are you?”

The Rock explains Black Lives Matter

While The Rock doesn’t use Trump’s name, he continues to call out the president for not showing leadership in one of the country’s most difficult chapters.

“Where is our compassionate leader who’s gonna step up to our country, which is down on its knees and extend a hand, and say ‘You stand up. Stand up with me, because I gotchu. I gotchu, I hear you, I’m listening to you,” he said.

“You have my word that I will do everything in my power, until my dying day, until my last breath, to do everything I can, to create the change that is needed, to normalise equality, because black lives matter,” The Rock said as, he stared into the camera.

The Rock went on to explain the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement, instead of using the words ‘All Lives Matter’.

“Of course all lives matter. Every single one. All lives matter, because we as Americans, we believe in inclusivity, we believe in acceptance. We believe in human rights. We believe in equality for all,” he said.

“So of course all lives matter. In this moment right now, in this defining, pivotal, explosive moment where our country is down on its knees, the floorboards of our country are becoming unhinged in this moment.

“We must say the words. Black lives matter.”
