Are you this generous? New trend in tipping sweeps social media

A generous new trend is sweeping across American restaurants, as people are leaving tips that match the price of the bill.

The ‘tip the bill challenge’ urges diners to ‘pay it forward’ by leaving a 100 per cent tip for waiters. While tipping may not be expected in Australia, US hospitality staff rely on it and the tipping challenge is a hot talking point in American restaurants.

Spreading good vibes, social media users are posting photos of restaurant receipts with hefty tips. The bills have hand written notes saying #tipthebill or #tipthebillchallenge.

“Tweeting this for good luck #tipthebillchallenge,” one Twitter user said as she posted an image of her $87.46 bill with a $87.46 tip.

“Thank you for great service #tipthebill challenge,” a hand written note on the receipt said.

Some people are upping the ante, leaving 500 per cent tips. One person posted on Twitter a picture of a $20.48 bill with a $105.48 tip and a handwritten note saying “#tipchallengedonebetter”.

The challenge is bringing a smile to wait staff, with one waiter posting a photo of a generous $61.04 tip saying, “someone did the #tipthebill to me at work today and let me just say my day was made”.

“Got lucky and got this yesterday. Thanks to that wonderful lady for giving me this!” another waiter said, posting a picture of their $37.70 cash tip.
