Out-of-control garbage truck smashes into Sydney family's yard

School drop off outside a suburban primary became a less than ordinary affair on Monday morning when a 20 tonne garbage truck left the road and crashed through a shopping centre fence and ended up in someone’s back yard.

The aftermath of the drama showed the huge truck teetering on the edge of a retaining wall and stopping just a few centimetres away from two family homes in the Sydney suburb of Belrose.

Home-owner Katherine Lemmetty told 9News she had run around the back of her house to find the enormous truck almost resting against her dining room window, in a patch of yard where the family frequently spent time.

One parent who was dropping her children off at the nearby Belrose Primary School said the drama had almost unfolded in “slow motion”, as the truck went “down the hill, over the fence and then into the back yard”.

The expensive and difficult rescue operation required police guard as two tow trucks failed to shift the garbage truck and a 150 tonne crane had to be called in.
