Garbage truck driver charged with manslaughter over Sydney CBD hit-and-run

A garbage truck driver who allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian in Sydney’s CBD has been charged with manslaughter.

Emergency services responded to the scene about 1.30am (local time) on Wednesday after the body of a 21-year-old man was found on a footpath on Central Street, according to NSW Police.

Police attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were on the scene and inquiries indicated it was a garbage truck which struck the victim.

The crime scene was examined by specialist forensic officers and the Crash Investigation Unit took lead in the investigation.

It will be alleged in court the driver reversed the truck at speed, striking the victim and knocking him down.

Police arrested a 51-year-old driver on Darlinghurst Road in Kings Cross just hours later about 4.30am following inquiries.

Investigators will further allege the driver got out of his garbage truck, moved the 21-year-old pedestrian off the road before driving from the scene without contacting emergency services or rendering assistance.

The driver has also been charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), improperly interfere with corpse or human remains and not reverse vehicle safely.

The driver was denied bail and will face court tomorrow.
