Gabby Petito's mum shares devastating moment: 'This can't be our life'

Gabby Petito's mother has described how it feels to be constantly reminded of her daughter's death after the high-profile case saturated national and international media coverage.

Nichole Schmidt was thrust into the spotlight when her daughter's disappearance and death made Global headlines.

Taking to social media earlier, Ms Schmidt shared a devastating moment which highlights how her grieving process has been extra difficult.

As she turned on her TV, opening the streaming service Hulu this week, the recommended show was aobut her daughter's case.

"When you turn on Hulu, and your daughters story is the recommended show to watch," Ms Schmidt tweeted.

"It’s still shocking, feels like I’m outside looking in, this cannot be our life."

Ms Schmidt has previously said her life after Gabby's death has been surreal. She told 60 Minutes she never anticipated how much attention her daughter's death would get.

"Nobody expects anything like this to happen, let alone the attention that it's gotten," she said.

On Twitter, many people were very supportive of Ms Schmidt, sympathising with her pain.

"We must keep going!!" Ms Schmidt said on the social media, tagging Gabby's step-father Jim Schmidt, her father Joseph Petito and her step-mother Tara Petito.

Ms Schmidt, along with Mr Schmidt, Mr Petito and Ms Petito founded the Gabby Petito Foundation.

The foundation aims to help locate missing persons and support organisations that assist victims of domestic violence situations, through education, preventative strategies and awareness.

"We wish to turn our personal tragedy into a positive," the foundation's mission page says.

"It is our hope that Gabby’s foundation will bring these important issues into the forefront of the public eye to the benefit of all our communities."

Gabby was reported missing by her family back in September, after they hadn't heard from her in days while she was on a cross-country road trip with her partner, Brian Laundrie.

Gabby's remains were found at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming in September.

Brian's remains were also found in a reserve in Florida last month, following a manhunt.
