Armed fugitive Stanley Turvey was shot dead by police after a three-day manhunt ended in a police standoff.

Turvey was shot during a confrontation with police at an address in Ardmona, in Victoria’s Greater Shepparton area, on Wednesday morning.

Police said just after 10.15am officers from the special operations group had attended an address on information the fugitive was hiding out there.

Special Operations Group operatives were confronted by Turvey, who was armed, and subsequently shot him, a statement from Victoria Police said.

He was given first aid but paramedics declared him dead at the scene shortly after.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Karen Nyholm acknowledged that there was an “impact” on the local community and police officers involved in the incident, saying it was a “traumatic period”.

“All the police that have been involved in this search will be impacted by both the search and the outcome of that. Policing is a really, really tough thing,” she said.

She also thanked the public who were “subjected to some of the criminal activity of Stanley Turvey over the past 48 hours”.

The officers had attended the scene as part of an investigation to arrest Turvey, who fired a shot in the air when he was asked to drop the weapon.

He then fled the scene in a vehicle before travelling to a random residence in Youanmite where he forced a man at gunpoint to drive him across the NSW border to Finley.

It is alleged Turvey then assaulted a woman and stole a vehicle on Witt St in Yarrawonga just before 10am on Tuesday.

During their initial pursuit of Turvey on Monday, the two officers lost control and subsequently rolled the police car they were travelling in on Creighton Rd in Katandra West.

Both officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for observation.

Police later swarmed Turvey’s Finley property, located in the NSW Riverina region, on Monday night.

Ms Nyholm reiterated that officers had attempted to take him “safely into custody” rather than have a fatal outcome.

“This is not the outcome that we would have wanted today. We wanted to take him into safe custody,” she said.

“But it‘s fair to say we need to do what it is to protect the public protect ourselves in that situation.”

“Your house is surrounded by heavily armed police,” officers can be heard shouting in the footage.

“Come to the front door with your hands in the air.”

On Tuesday Turvey’s family made an emotional plea, begging him to turn himself in.

He was addressed publicly by his uncle who told 9 News that things could “end badly”.

“If you’re listening, hand yourself in, mate, before it gets too bad. Do it for your father,” he said.

“There’s probably only one way you can look at it. It’s going to end badly.”

Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident and the State Coroner has been notified of Turvey’s death.

Victoria Police have thanked the community for assisting in their search.
