Local man Darren Royce Willis was last seen leaving the Imperial Hotel in Bingara - a small New England town on the Gwydir River - on the night of December 10, 2010.
He was 45 at the time.
His body has never been found and police believe he was murdered.
Officers and police divers began a new search on Tuesday morning in Four Mile, about 10km west of the hotel.
