Fresh details have emerged into the shooting chaos that hit Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Redfern on Friday evening.

NSW Police have confirmed the man who was shot and killed in the car park of a BP service station had links to organised crime.

Emergency services were called to the service station on Baptist Street near Cleveland Street about 7.45pm on Friday following reports of shots fired.

Officers found a man in his 30s with gunshot wounds to his upper torso, with the shooter still on the run as of Saturday morning.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him however he died at the scene.

South Sydney Police Area Command Superintendent Andrew Garner confirmed the man was known to police and had links to organised crime.

“This was definitely a targeted attack … the male that died had known links to organised crime,” Superintendent Garner said.

“So on that basis, we believe it was targeted, and that he was the intended target of that attack, and there’s no broader risk or threat to the public in relation to this.”

He said the man was in his car when he was shot.

“At the time he was shot, he was alone in his vehicle at the service station,” he said.

“After that, he got out of the vehicle and went on foot down Cleveland Street … where he eventually died.”

Emergency services were then called to a nearby car fire on Kensington Road a short time later, with police believing the two incidents are linked.

Superintendent Garner called the shooting an “outrageous incident” that had put the public at risk.

“This was outrageous incident, demonstrated a high level of reckless indifference to the public in and around that area at the time and we’ve been working very hard to identify and arrest those involved and hold it to account,” he said.

A crime scene has been established while an investigation has been launched, with Superintendent Garner issuing a warning to those who may have been involved in the shooting: “We’re coming for you”.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
