From bagel to bust: Caroline Wozniacki's 'rare' French Open fate

Caroline Wozniacki was on the wrong side of "one of those rare scorelines in tennis" after suffering a shock first round defeat at the French Open.

The 2018 Australian Open champion and former World No.1 went down to Russian debutant Veronika Kudermetova 0-6 6-3 6-3 on Monday night (AEDT).

Wozniacki looked on track for a comfortable first up win after handing her opponent a first set bagel.

Incredibly though, after looking so impressive in the opening set the Dane began to unravel as the match wore on.

Wozniacki's Russian rival took full advantage to claim the second set and send the first round match in a deciding third set.

Wozniacki's frustrations boiled over at one point as she gestured angrily towards her player's box.

Kudermetova raced out to a handy advantage in the deciding set and the 22-year-old needed only one shot at serving the match as she booked her spot in the second round courtesy of the three-set win.

The Dane's crazy defeat left fans shocked on social media.

The Danish 13th seed had retired injured from her two previous matches in the lead-up to Roland Garros, but looked to have found form in a one-sided opening set.

Last year's Australian Open champion lost her way in the second set, though, making 10 unforced errors, before the 22-year-old Kudermetova cruised to victory in the decider on a sparsely-populated Court Philippe Chatrier.

"I was a little bit nervous at the start of the match, but I took it game by game and tried to be more aggressive," said the Russian.

Kudermetova will face either Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas or French wildcard Audrey Albie in the second round.
