'I thought he was a goner': Freak chainsaw accident sees man cut across neck

A 54-year-old wood cutter has survived a horrendous chainsaw accident in Victoria’s far north east thanks to an amazing run of good fortune.

Joe Hogg was cutting wood on Saturday when his chainsaw kicked back and cut his neck.

His mate ran to the nearest property for help, and luckily Brenda Noonan was home.

“[There was] a gentleman laying on his back with severe blood loss everywhere and quite a lot still spurting from a horrendous wound in his neck,” Ms Noonan said.

Luckily, Ms Noonan had also done first aid training. She used paper and cloth towels to try to stem the blood flow.

“I was just on my knees next to him, just holding his neck and praying like crazy, you know, just hoping and wishing and praying that he would live,” Ms Noonan said.

Then Joe’s luck really kicked in. His neighbours could call approaching ambulance officers for help because of a newly installed mobile tower.

“I thought he was a goner,” Corryong Police Leading Senior Constable Ross Martin admitted.

“[But] the tower was officially opened on Friday, and on Saturday someone’s life was saved because of it.”

They guided the air ambulance in by phone.

Joe is now in Canberra hospital in a stable condition.
