Frantic moment brave man and friend save passenger from fiery crash wreckage
A Melbourne man is being hailed a hero for putting his own life at risk to save another man from a fiery wreckage.
Youssef Tawk and his friend did not think twice when they realised two men were trapped inside a burning car after it crashed into a truck and became wedged underneath in Preston, in Melbourne’s north.
The driver in his 30s was killed and had no chance as his door was wedged under the tray of the truck.
But Mr Tawk and his friend managed to grab his moaning passenger and pull him to safety seconds before the car burst into flames.
The rescue was caught on camera.
“We heard a big bag and dropped our gear and ran to the car,” Mr Tawk said.
“There were flames everywhere.
“We saw there were two people in there. We grabbed one and the other one we weren’t able to grab him (the driver).”
Mr Tawk added “it was too red hot” to retrieve the driver. The car was totally incinerated.
Workers at a nearby factory said earlier they saw the Holden Commodore doing burnouts and sparks flying from the wheels moments before it crashed and erupted into flames.
The pair had been seen drinking at Cramer’s Hotel before the crash.
Mr Tawk would not call himself a hero but said he would not hesitate to do it again.
The passenger, who police at first had trouble identifying, remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit with family by his side.
