France Rejects Algerian Plot Claims After Ambassador Summoned

(Bloomberg) -- France dismissed allegations by Algeria it was involved in attempts to destabilize the North African country after authorities in Algiers summoned the French ambassador to reprimand him.

Algerian media, including newspaper Le Soir d’Algerie, on Sunday reported the envoy’s summoning, in what appeared the latest feud between the OPEC nation and its former colonial ruler. Algeria’s foreign ministry wasn’t available to comment.

“These are unfounded and far-fetched accusations,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in an interview with France Inter radio. “I obviously had our ambassador on the telephone to reassure him of our support.”

The incident comes almost five months after France angered Algeria by recognizing its rival Morocco’s rule over Western Sahara, the disputed territory where Algiers backs a pro-independence movement. Algeria has been a significant supplier of liquefied natural gas to France.
