The main suspect in last week's deadly knife attack in a church in Nice has been transferred to a hospital in Paris for further treatment, an anonymous source has confirmed.

The 21-year-old Tunisian man, who had recently arrived in France via Italy, was shot 14 times by police after the attack and was subsequently hospitalised in a critical condition.

Local media reported that he had been flown to Paris earlier on Friday and that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

This could not be independently verified by the DPA news agency.

Three people were killed in the October 29 attack, which President Emmanuel Macron described as an act of Islamist terrorism.

It was the second deadly attack in a month, after the beheading in a Paris suburb of a schoolteacher who had used controversial cartoons of the prophet Mohammed in a lesson on freedom of expression.
