A four-year-old Melbourne girl is devastated after her labrador puppy "best friend" was believed to be stolen from the family home during a burglary on Monday morning.

The Croydon Hills family is pleading for the safe return of the eight-week old pup Sasha, which the family reported as stolen, along with a laptop, iPad and jewellery.

The Hood family returned home about 11.30am Monday to discover their Croydon Hills Drive home had been broken into, police said.

It’s believed the thief entered the home between 9.30-11.30am that morning.

Despite an extensive search of the area, Sasha wasn’t found and police suspect she was also stolen during the burglary.

The little girl's dad Ryan Hood told 3AW radio the family wasn't so concerned about the "material things" taken, but desperately wanted their dog Sasha to come home.

"My daughter is devastated, unsurprisingly," he told Ross and John Wednesday morning.

He said Sasha was his daughter's best friend, and she has been having nightmares since her pup had not come home.

"She'd go to bed with it every night and we'd have to take her back to her bed."

"It's very difficult to explain to a four-year-old how something like this could happen," he said.

Although there is a possibility the pup escaped after the offenders left, police and family suspect she was stolen.

Police have released images of the puppy in the hope that someone has seen her and she can be reunited with her four-year-old owner.
