Four people killed in horror car rollover on remote highway

A car crash victim was found walking a stretch of Northern Territory highway searching for help after a horrific fatal smash.

Tourists came across the Aboriginal woman walking just off the Kakadu Highway early on Friday.

She was taken to Pine Creek, southeast of Darwin, to report the crash to police.

She had been in a car with four other people, including two men and two women, when their car crashed and rolled at some point between Thursday night and Friday morning.

The two men and one of the women died at the scene. A second woman died on the way to hospital.

The woman found walking along the side of the road has been hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries.

NT Police Commander Tony Fuller described it as a “horrible day for us on the roads” and “speed and alcohol were definitely factors”.

“That takes our road toll up to 42 for the year compared to 23 last year,” he said.

“It’s a really horrific road toll this year.”

He added the identities of those who died in the crash have yet to be confirmed but it is believed they had been seen at a homestead in Mary River, north of Pine Creek, on Thursday about 8.30pm.

Commander Fuller said police were appealing for anyone who saw a silver Nissan X-Trail on the Kakadu Highway after 9pm on Thursday to contact them.
