Cars were slipping and sliding in parts of northern Georgia on Tuesday, January 21, as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm warning cautioning treacherous roads.Santiago Rodriguez’s dash camera captured the moment he removed his shirt to help his mom, in the car ahead, navigate an icy road in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He told Storyful he saw his mom’s car slipping so he got out to help by putting his shirt under a tire for traction.The video shows the trick briefly work before his mom’s car starts to slip again. Rodriguez can be seen slipping as he jogs back to his own car, though he manages to recover quickly and with a smile on his face. Additional clips Rodriguez captured show drivers struggling to gain traction on frozen roads, with several vehicles seen slowly bumping into other cars while attempting to stop.On Tuesday night, the Atlanta Department of Transportation said they had salt trucks working throughout the city and urged anyone in the area to stay off the roads.The NWS warned that even though above-freezing temperatures could improve roadways on Wednesday, freezing temperatures overnight would refreeze any wet surfaces and black ice would remain an issue into Thursday morning.
