The death toll from a bus accident in Peru has risen to 33 after four bodies were discovered under the vehicle, local police say.

Another 20 people were injured when the coach travelling from Huanuco in the Andes to the capital Lima went off the road near the town of Chosica and plunged 200 metres on Tuesday.

According to initial investigations, the driver was apparently travelling at more than 90 km/h in a section with a limit of 35 km/h, according to the road traffic authority.

Serious bus accidents are not uncommon in Peru, where road conditions can be difficult and buses are not always in good condition.
